Wednesday - At 7:30 a.m. we loaded our things on two buses and began our journey to Camp Kulaqua in High Springs, FL for the Southern Union Camporee. I just knew that this trip was going to be long. For some of us, this wasn’t the first time going to Kulaqua, but it was for most. Many people would expect the bus to be quiet at 7:30 a.m. because kids would still be sleepy from waking up so early. To those people, you could never be more wrong. We had kids laughing and screaming, others were playing guitars and a ukulele. We were able to take three seniors from Bass Memorial Academy after they went to View Southern to meet their group. Amazingly our trip flew by. Before anyone knew it we were stopping to eat lunch. We had a choice of either PB & J or chicken salad. As we were eating, two other Pathfinder clubs pulled up to eat. When we were all done and cleaned up, we set out—next stop, Camp Kulaqua. We arrived, and to our dismay, we had to wait in a line of cars and buses for about 30 minutes. When we got to our designated spot, the bus I was on got stuck in the mud. The tires started spinning and you could see some mud flying. We unloaded everyone and just left the bus there for the remainder of our stay. Soon after unpacking the trailer, everyone began to set up camp. Soon it was time to go to the meeting. We walked over and looked at all the Pathfinders. There were to be 5600 of us. A few clubs hadn’t come yet, though. The theme of the Camporee was “Called to Serve”. The meeting started with song service with Ken Rogers. Bill Young was the person who introduced all of us to our theme song. José Rojas was the speaker that night. It was about 9:30 p.m. when the meeting finished. Back at camp, everyone was pretty tired. I went straight to bed while others stayed up talking with one another. |
